Salutations, everyone...former SGA Co-President here.

I hope everyone is having a great and safe summer (as short as it is for some of us).

I was wondering if anyone had a picture of our great mascot, the Fightin' Pigeon, much like the ones on the yellow t-shirts. If anyone has it, could you comment here with the picture...I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Fightin' Pigeons forever!

i hesitated to post this, but it's worth it.

three of our friends were hurt in a car collision briefly following the voices' of inspiration final concert on friday night.

i ask that you hold jarita muirhead, valerie davis and damique smith in your prayers and well wishes

for those of you who are in miami and interested in visiting, valerie and damique [as of now] are currently at jackson memorial hospital at the ryder trauma center. jarita is in her own room on the west wing of the same hospital. contact the hospital for up to date information on their conditions, and again, please hold all three girls and their families in your prayers, well wishes, positive energy or whatever can best reflect our desire to see them heal well and without complication.

ATTENTION [15 May 2005|03:22pm]

do any of you know Carina Kaiser?

I went to this party last night and saw her there then I gave some people a ride and her wallet somehow ended up in my car.

I would appreciate a telephone number so that I can let her know as soon as possible that it's been found. If you don't feel comfortable giving someone her phone over the internet you can call me @ 786 351 4865.

Banning pro-homosexual theatre [23 Mar 2005|03:11pm]

[ mood | fuming ]

This is important for you New World kids. Is Ms. Leone still teaching there or is she still sick? If she's around please let her know about this and encourage discussion on it. Or Sra. Miranda. Or Remis. Anyone and everyone!!!!

Tell them this came from Maribou.

"President Bush wants 'pro-homosexual' drama banned. 'We have to protect people.' "

I'm furious.

Last week, Bush's base introduced a bill that would ban the use of state funds to purchase any books or other materials that "promote homosexuality". Allen does not want taxpayers' money to support "positive depictions of homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle".

"Traditional family values are under attack," Allen informs me. They've been under attack "for the last 40 years". The enemy, this time, is not al-Qaida. The axis of evil is "Hollywood, the music industry". We have an obligation to "save society from moral destruction". We have to prevent liberal libarians and trendy teachers from "re-engineering society's fabric in the minds of our children". We have to "protect Alabamians".

Would Allen's bill prevent university students from performing A Chorus Line? It isn't that he's against the theatre, Allen explains. "But why can't you do something else?"

Cutting off funds to theatre departments that put on A Chorus Line or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof may look like censorship, and smell like censorship, but "it's not censorship", Allen hastens to explain. "For instance, there's a reason for stop lights. You're driving a vehicle, you see that stop light, and I hope you stop." Who can argue with something as reasonable as stop lights? Of course, if you're gay, this particular traffic light never changes to green.

Allen claims he is acting to "encourage and protect our culture". Does "our culture" include Shakespeare?

Forty years ago, the American defenders of "our culture" and "traditional values" were opposing racial integration. Now, no politician would dare attack Cornelius Carter for being black. But it's perfectly acceptable to discriminate against people for what they do in bed.

"Dig a hole," Gerald Allen recommends, "and dump them in it."

Of course, Allen was talking about books. He was just talking about books. He never said anything about pink triangles.

What is going on with America????? The way things are going, our government is on the way towards becoming totalitarian.
Censorship censorship censorship. What's next? Books, songs, art, dance????? Are all our forms of artisitc expression which are controversial going to be buried in holes too?

EDIT (4:15pm): Here's a link which shows that this issue is safe, for now--at least until next year.
Allen: Likely no action on gay lit bill this year

And here are the some of the interesting comments written on this last articleCollapse )

I hope everyone is enjoying (and getting some much deserved SLEEP during) this Winter Break!

By the way, if your bored these next couple of days, you can support the NWSA Concert Choir by viewing their 2004 holiday concert, titled "New World Musical Holiday" on WLRN (PBS-17). In case you missed the debut of the 3rd annual special (this is the first year the special was picked up by several markets in Florida and a few in Georgia) on Tuesday, December 21...or the actual concert date on December 9th, then you can catch it on the following days:

Tonight-Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. (also simulcasted on WLRN Radio-91.3 FM)

Tomorrow night-Christmas, Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 8:00 P.M.

& Boxing Day/First Day of Kwanzaa, Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 5:00 P.M.

The special features guests John Ferguson, organist and conductor from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN; the Southwood Middle School Girls Choir under the direction of Deborah Mar; as well as the NWSA Brass Quintet, and our very own NWSA Concert Choir and Women's Chorale!!!

It's a sure delight!!!

Happy Holidays, Fightin' Pigeons...10 more days until school's back in!
